专辑介绍：勤奋、高产的布里顿写过十多部歌剧，而且其中的《卢克来修受辱记》、《阿尔贝·埃林》、《旋螺丝》、《仲夏夜之梦》和《命终威尼斯》这几部，还都相当成功。当然，布里顿最出色的歌剧还是这部他自撰脚本的《彼得·格里姆斯》，它被认为是自珀塞尔的《狄多与埃涅阿斯》以来的两个半世纪的漫长岁月里，在英国舞台上出现的第一部真正的歌剧杰作，有着划时代的意义。
主人公格里姆斯是个普通渔民，但脾气古怪，独往独来，令所有在小镇的街坊们对他日渐反感，表现出深深的敌意。剧中的他不断受到种种诬告的骚扰，又因他的雇工失踪，街坊们怀疑是被他杀害。格里姆斯意气消沉，不容于世，终于驾船出海自沉。
音乐深刻地融于戏剧，成全了整体的氛围和情绪。四首“大海”间奏曲非常著名，常作为音乐会演奏的乐曲。
在这套录音极佳，且由作曲家本人指挥演绎的唱片里，饰演格里姆斯的男高音皮尔斯十分引人注目。他不仅是该剧1945年首演时的主角，而且事实上布里顿写格里姆斯这个人物的时候，心中每每出现的就是皮尔斯的歌声。由于皮尔斯与布里顿之间长期亲密的友谊，以及他终生致力于推介布里顿音乐的不懈努力，使他成为演唱布里顿作品的第一男高音，是早有公论了。
