故事发生在1942年，巴黎沦陷之后，阿尔及利亚青年尤尼斯（塔哈·拉希姆 Tahar Rahim 饰）开始靠着在黑市里倒卖商品维生。常在河边走，哪有不湿鞋，在一次走私活动中，尤尼斯遭到了警方的捕获，作为释放条件，警方决定将尤尼斯派往一座位于巴黎的清真寺做卧底，他们怀疑清真寺的负责人本（迈克尔·朗斯代尔 Michael Lonsdale 饰）一直在给法国抵抗运动革命者提供掩护。
在清真寺里，尤尼斯结识了名为哈拉里（Mahmoud Shalabi 饰）的歌手，很快，两人之间就结下了深厚的友谊。刚开始，尤尼斯还会向警方暗中提供情报，但随着时间的推移，自由的薪火在他的内心里逐渐被点燃。
