　　解放前老北京有句话“东富西贵、南贫北贱”，小井就是位于北家南城的一条小胡同。这里住的都是些极寻常不起眼儿的老百姓，其中有开电车的、面铺掌柜的、国民党军队的伙夫、当过巡警的鞋匠，卖水的、卖艺的、算卦的、从良妓女、潦倒旗人，总之没有一位大富大贵的主儿。生活对于这些市井细民来说自然不会绚丽如诗，平凡，琐屑，苦涩多于欢乐，但无论哪朝哪代。这些小人物却都以底层民众特有的善良，宽厚与幽默面对着世道带给他们的一切。
　　巡警吴七和丁家少奶奶苦难的爱情，查老大与张妈奇特的婚姻，善良的查六爷忽发奇想和“侠举，'刘家祥与厄运打哈哈儿，何二爷的刚正不阿，陈九龄啼笑皆非的“舍己为人”，春喜扭曲的灵魂，小环子犯坏石掌柜、小李秃，这些老街坊们在灾难面前的勇气和相儒以沫，以及对“胡同政治明星”——小媳妇的周旋，较量，这一切与北京城特有的民俗风情交织在一起，构成了一曲深远悠长的“胡同交响曲”，而在那时而急管繁弦，时尔低吟浅唱之中，人们也分明听到了中国几十年的风雨之声。
